City of Bones (Mortal Instruments, Book 1)
Dark, funny and does not skirt around issues that YAs deal with. That's the type of YA I like. The paranormal world is big and the kids deal with real race, sexuality and diversity issues. It's not too teen-angsty (although there is a heathy dose of that too).
I didn't want to like this series because it just felt like another one made into a movie and now they're splitting the second book into two movies, which is just ridiculous. BUT the books are great!
My main problem is that I already know that I will fnish the first 5 books very soon and will then be waiting around for the next one. I would highly recommend the series.
