City of Ashes (Mortal Instruments)
The second one is just as good or better than the first. Dark, funny and does not skirt around issues that YAs deal with. That's the type of YA I like.
The paranormal world is big and the kids deal with real race, sexuality and diversity issues. It's not too teen-angsty (although there is a heathy dose of that too).
I didn't want to like this series because it just felt like another one made into a movie and now they're splitting the second book into two movies, which is just ridiculous. BUT the books are great!
My main problem is that I already know that I will fnish the first 5 books very soon and will then be waiting around for the next one. I would highly recommend the series.
